Description

At PPRO, our mission is to simplify access to local payment methods and our vision is to enable the sale of goods and services to anyone in the world using their preferred way to pay. We empower partners such as Ant Group, PayPal and Stripe to access new markets, connect with more customers, and accelerate their growth.

Our strength lies in our diverse global team with 50+ nationalities and 10+ international locations- all united around one goal – to deliver the best possible products and services to our partners and customers. While our company mission is to keep innovating global commerce, our internal mission is to #chooseaction, #beopen, #thinkcustomer, #gofurther and #wintogether

The Purpose:

The Data & Analytics team at PPRO is a strategic partner to business, tech, and operations. Our mission is to transform our data ecosystem into a self-service contributor platform that enables faster, more confident decision-making across the organization. We are building a modern, scalable data infrastructure that serves as a single source of truth, driving growth and operational excellence.

As a Staff Data Engineer, you will be a technical leader within the domain. You won’t just build pipelines; you will architect the frameworks that allow other teams to publish and consume data with minimal friction.

What you will do:

  • Own the long-term technical vision for data engineering within your scope. Architect and implement petabyte scale data platform and frameworks that enable frictionless data publishing and consumption across the organisation.

  • Lead the effort to unify fragmented data models into single sources of truth for critical business domains. Define and enforce high standards for data quality, metadata, and documentation.

  • Work independently across multiple teams to identify and remove technical blockers. Partner with product and engineering leads to design and provide the reusable frameworks and data platform capabilities that ensure data is a default part of new service development from day one.

  • Improve data platform reliability and performance by optimizing data ingestion and transformation processes. Lead the response to complex technical incidents and establish proactive monitoring and alerting, ensuring automated data observability and quality gates.

  • Coach and guide engineers across the organisation and in interfacing teams on data engineering best practices and foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Implement and automate data governance protocols, including PII tagging, data lifecycle management, and secure access controls, ensuring compliance without adding unnecessary friction for users.

  • Treat the data platform as a product, identifying internal ‘customer’ pain points and roadmapping technical solutions that increase developer velocity across all of PPRO engineering

What you will bring:

  • 10+ years experience in data engineering and data warehousing, with a track record of delivering high-impact, complex technical projects, and hands-on experience building reusable data models (e.g., using dbt, SQL, and modern data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake)

  • Strong experience with distributed systems and cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS). You apply rigorous software engineering principles to design for scale, reliability, and cost-efficiency.

  • Agentic first mindset and experience building systems that utilize metadata and LLMs to automate complex engineering reasoning, e.g. automated root-cause analysis (RCA) or SQL generation/optimization agents

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and translate high-level business goals into actionable technical roadmaps.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at various levels and explain complex technical trade-offs clearly.

  • A strong sense of ownership, a solution-oriented mindset, and a passion for making things better through data.
